About Karabo FM:
Youth Advisory Centre was the other project that KYDO started with the help of Social Development in the same year. This division is focusing on developing youth in and around Sasolburg. This is done through workshops, seminars and camps around themes such as substance abuse; HIV/AIDS; Women and Children abuse together with the other government departments. The centre which is now also looking for business opportunities is operating the Car Wash which was also made possible by the Social Development.
- The other division is the radio station whose broadcasting license was granted in December 2008 but only managed to transmit live in April 2009. This is the only station in the Free State and Vaal licensed to broadcast with five official languages i.e. English, Southern Sotho, Xhosa, Zulu and Pedi. We are situated in Sasolburg in the Northern part of Free State. Our coverage reaches Kroonstad to the south, Vaal, Soweto to the North. Million thanks to Metsimaholo Local Municipality for purchasing the broadcasting studio for Karabo FM.
Karabo fm plays hit music in predominantly the dance formats of House, Kwaito, R&B and Hip-Hop, with an emphasis on South African music more than international at 60 % – 40% ratio. Secondary genres include Acid Jazz and traditional. Our programmes consist of 60 % talk and 40 % music and that makes us more informative to our listeners.
Karabo was awarded in 2005 for its contributions in the community and the lives of the young people:
- The Premier’s Youth Award – first prize in Community Youth Service
- Free State Finalist of the Community builder of the year by Old Mutual/SABC/Sowetan.
