A German engineering company donated broadcasting equipment needed to set up the station. In April 1996 Vukani went on air. The station encourages community participation in local development, and special emphasis is placed on previously disadvantaged communities. The aired programmes feature local entertainment, and highlight relevant information and education in the region.

A platform for liberatory discussion and debate of socio-economic, educational and cultural issues. Development of indigenous languages, skills and rural consumer industries through presentations by the people themselves.

History of Unitra Community Radio (UCR-FM):

The station was established in 1995 as a brain child of Proffessor Tokollo Moleah who was a Vice Chancellor at the University Of Transkei. It only went on air in 1996 under the leadership of Mr Kenny Mathe who was the first Station Manager Unitra students were roped in as volunteers because of their enthusiasm and the first presenter to go on air was the late Luvuyo Ndum-Ndum.

After the locally based Radio Transkei closed down UCR FM grew rapidly from being just another campus radio to being a fully fledged community radio station. After the realization of the cultural diversity of the community it served, it was decided that the station should broadcast in four languages namely IsiXhosa, Sesotho, IsiZulu and English.

The aim of the station was to involve the community as much as possible in terms of training and skills development and financial gain was not a priority. Promotion of multi-culturalism was top of its agenda to make sure that UCR is viewed as center of excellence.

Unitra also established an international connection with countries like Germany and Sweden who continually fund the progress of the station. The station has been through some seriously bad times but somehow has always managed to escape unharmed.

About Mdantsane FM:

Mdantsane place. Follow us on a pilgrimage to Mdantsane to discover the street culture, fashion, food, people, music, homes, taverns, humor, businesses, history and what’s hot in the second biggest township in South-Africa, located close to the city of East London in the Province of the Eastern Cape. Join us on this journey while we capture the spirit of this amazing place for you in the here and in the now. We are going to introduce you to many individuals, artists, musicians, groups and associations.

They are the HEROES OF DAILY LIFE. They are the people who create, innovate and improve their life and their stories deserve to be told. This is a place for only good and positive stories of humanity, that will send out a message of courage, endurance and strength to the world through their pictures and words.

History of Mdantsane FM:

The Mdantsane Way is a new kind of online magazine: authentic, personal and interactive, with engaging long-form storytelling.

The Mdantsane Way is a journal profiling and documenting the second biggest township in South Africa-which to us means narrative with a strong sense of place, character or time. We’ve run stories about the Nelson Mandela Day in Mdantsane, being a mother, woman and a poet writing in Isixhosa and about the only Old Age Home in Mdantsane. We believe in the power of positive journalism and we don’t publish reviews of shops, functions and shopping centers or “Top 10 What To Do in Mdantsane.”

The magazine is published digitally so we can distribute globally, across borders and cultures, instantaneously. At present we are already including embedded multi-media content like music, interviews, video and slideshows, sharing capabilities and high-resolution imagery.

We are reader-supported, meaning your donation/grant helps pay to produce the magazine. The reader is the publisher at the same time.

The Mdantsane Way started as a web magazine in 2010. It was created as a follow up and direct consequence to a coffee table book of the same name The Mdantsane Way, we have written and published by now. With the online magazine we reached out to all the people who have given us their time, patience and their life stories while working on the book. It was an instrument for us to show them their own stories live on the web. Two years later we have thousands of readers in dozens of countries. Our readership grows daily. We write for a large South African audience as well as for the rest of the world. Our stories are read in Brazil, Mexico, France, Germany and the Philippines. Our stories are written by us and by guest authors.
