Centurion, South Africa, 14 June 2021 – Tennis South Africa (TSA) and the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) are delighted to announce a new three-year media rights partnership.

The collaboration, that commences later this month, includes a monthly TSA magazine show and nine live weekend broadcasts per contract year – showcasing existing tournaments hosted in the country, as well as two newly created prize money events.

The half-hour format monthly magazine show will be a fast-paced look at all areas of local tennis – including shining a spotlight on South Africa’s current and emerging tennis stars. Meanwhile, the nine live broadcasts will include coverage of selected ATP Challenger and ITF World Tennis Tour events currently hosted in South Africa, the David Samaai Junior Open (an ITF elite junior Grade A tournament), a Tie Break Tens exhibition event and the SABC Slam – a new big prize money event for local male and female players.

“I’m really excited about being able to get South African tennis events back where they belong – live, on the SABC. This is good for SABC Sport, good for Tennis South Africa and great for the millions of South Africans who love the game and want to re-connect with the local experience, as much as to what is happening internationally. We believe we can pay a key role in building the image and profile of tennis in our country and allow the game to touch the lives of millions more South Africans. To Tennis South Africa, all I can add is, welcome home,” said Gary Rathbone, the General Manager of SABC Sport.

“Tennis in South Africa is on an upwards trajectory, but for the sport to achieve its true potential it needs to reach as many South Africans as possible. Our new free to air broadcast partnership with the SABC provides us with a powerful platform from which to achieve this goal. We love the new SABC Sport vision and look forward to working closely with Gary (Rathbone) and his team to showcase the best of local tennis over the next three years,” concluded Richard Glover, CEO of TSA.

The SABC Sport GM, Gary Rathbone further elaborated, “we know how big the game of tennis still is in this country and to our audiences. Over many decades, South Africa produced some really talented players who went on to play top class international tennis, and still continues to do so with recent feats by the likes of Kevin Anderson, Lloyd Harris, Raven Klaasen and kgothatso Montjane . SABC Sport is therefore at the centre of showcasing the next raising talented group of players and bringing tennis into the homes of our audiences is the step in the right direction to inspire the future tennis champions.”

eNCA condemns in the strongest possible terms threats of violence and verbal attacks by supporters of the EFF including its leader Julius Malema against current affairs host Karima Brown.

In particular, we take extreme exception to her life being threatened, threats of rape; her telephone number being disseminated and the derogatory names she is being called.

We stand in full agreement with the SA National Editors Forum (SANEF) that this is also a hostile attack on media freedom in this country, particularly in a highly charged pre-election political climate in which all media houses are operating. We concur with SANEF that party leader Malema owes Ms Brown an apology and call on the EFF to immediately cease this intimidation and bullying.

Ms Brown is the presenter of a Sunday morning show called The Fix which takes a robust and analytical look at political issues facing the country. She also performs the role of political commentator where she is called on from time to time to provide analysis and insight into political stories. In the short term, she is also performing the role of Consulting Producer on the evening show Tonight with Jane Dutton where she assists in developing content and providing guidance when called upon.

With reference to a WhatsApp message that Ms Brown put out, it was simply one of guidance to our political team and pertinent questions we would ask of any political party. The issues queried in the message revolve around a point of how a young party with no significant body of retired past leadership selects a body of elders. It is, therefore, a legitimate question that deserves an answer rather than an attack on the questioner.

eNCA believes it would have been instructive and less damaging to all concerned had the EFF simply engaged on the matter with the station before resorting to what amounts to unfair harassment and aggression.

If the EFF has any complaints about content on the station or issues with individual presenters and reporters there are accepted avenues to follow including the Broadcasting Complaints Commission of South Africa.

We begin the New Year with a Special Assignment investigation into the murky world of the poultry industry. As we expose a multi-billion dollar business that operates without proper mechanisms in place to ensure product safety and quality controls.

Our investigation begins in Brazil, where a recent meat scandal has led to the country losing its credibility as a global leader in meat exports. In South Africa, we uncover how incorrect labeling on chicken at retail store Food Lovers Market – misleads shoppers and compromises the products safety, putting at risk the health of thousands of people that consume this meat.

A Brazilian Federal Police probe, last year code name, operation Weak Flesh uncovered that health inspectors were paid bribes to allow the sales of contaminated meat for export. Following reports of unsafe Brazilian meat, how safe are their imports to South Africa? After searching for imported meat in various local retailers, we discovered that Food Lovers Market sells chicken branded as a product of Brazil. To avoid an unbiased report we tested this meat sold at the retailer and also tested a popular brand of South African produced chicken. We found that the meat sold at Food Lovers Market contained high levels of bacteria which pose health risks.

Food Lovers Market declined our request to respond to the damning evidence in an on camera interview. Instead they issued a statement in which the company denies that the meat they sell in their stores is imported from Brazil. They say that it’s locally produced meat which they get from their distributors. It further states the poultry was wrongfully packaged as a Product of Brazil at their store.

The Consumer Protection Act specifically prohibits labeling that is misleading. Food Lovers Market says they did their own tests on the meat we uncovered and concedes that it does contain high levels of coliforms, but it’s safe to eat. A Food Safety Expert we interview says this indicates the meat is handled in unhygienic conditions. Dr Patrick Njobe says “these pathogens are toxigenic which are able to produce toxins that are found to cause cancers”.

Food Lovers Market says they have since introduced processes to prevent the wrongful re-branding of its chicken in future. But when we visited one of their stores we found its chicken is still being sold as a Product of Brazil. They also sell other chicken which they label as being a product of Argentina, USA and the European Union. The retailer is a major supplier of imported chicken which it sells at its stores countrywide and in neighboring states.

Local chicken producers say the industry is on the verge of collapse, because of the recent bird flu epidemic and imported chicken. We also travel to Hammersdale in KZN where we observe the alleged consequences of chicken imports at Rainbow Chickens – where more than a thousand workers were retrenched. Busisiwe Zungu a worker that lost her job after working at the company for 27years says “the poultry producer, Rainbow Chicken doesn’t have enough money or power to compete against imported chicken”. Local Poultry producers have accused export countries of dumping chicken in South Africa, which they cannot sell in their own markets.

In this episode, we ask the questions why government has failed to protect the local poultry industry from imported chicken. What’s been done to ensure retailers do not mislead the public with incorrect labeling to sell their products? And what regulations exist to ensure consumers are sold a safe, quality product?

WWE on e.tv
e.tv has announced that WWE will no longer be airing on the e family of channels from 1 September 2017. The channel will not be renewing its long-standing contract with WWE.

Marlon Davids, Managing Director of e.tv Channels says that the decision not to renew the WWE contract was not taken lightly. “e.tv has been the home of WWE in South Africa since 2001, but international rights contracts like this are complex,” he says. “After reviewing our renewal options, we decided to focus instead on the direction our entertainment lineup has been taking over the last 12 months.”

“We’re thrilled with the way our viewership numbers have grown, thanks to the local and international drama, comedy and reality shows which have found a home on the e family of channels,” says Davids. “As sad as we are to see WWE leave its home in South Africa, we’re confident that our audience will keep embracing the channels’ new direction and continue to be entertained by the fresh and engaging content which e.tv and the e family of channels currently hosts – and has plans to expand in the future.” Says Davids.

Over the last year, e.tv has become home to a host of new local shows, including Broken Vows, Harvest and long standing award-winning soapies such as Rhythm City and Scandal. The content strategy has included award-winning international series like How To Get Away With Murder, Empire, Hostages, Ray Donovan, Black-ish and The Fixer.

WWE programs will be replaced by back to back family movies on Saturdays and Sundays from September onwards. Weekdays will be replaced by House, an American television medical drama, which is another first for the Free to Air market.

The Endler Concert Series is proud to present young up and coming South African artists Jacqueline Martens (violin) and Sulayman Human (piano) on Tuesday 18 April at 20h00 in the Endler Hall.

Jacqueline Martens was born in South Africa and after moving to the UK began playing the violin at the age of five. Jacqui is currently a fourth year undergraduate scholar at the Royal College of Music, London and will continue to study her Masters in 2018. She is leader of the London Firebird Orchestra, and as a young professional in the highly competetive London music scene, already enjoys adhoc engagements with the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the Birmingham Philharmonic Orchestra as well as the European Union Youth Orchestra.

Sulayman Human started piano at the age of 12. In 2010 he was not only the youngest winner of the Lionel Bowman Beethoven Bursary Competition, hosted by Stellenbosch University, but the first and only person, to this day, to have won it whilst still in secondary school. He has gone on to win several competitions, namely Hennie Joubert National Piano Competition, Artscape National Youth Music Competition, Atterbury National Piano Competition and SACS Music competition. He was a semi-finalist at the 2015 Unisa National Piano Competition. Over the years Sulayman has been a finalist of the ATKV Muziq competition, and was placed third in 2016. In 2016 he received second prize at the Olive Lieberz National Piano Competition. Sulayman is currently enrolled for a Master of Music (Solo Performance) degree at Stellenbosch University.

Jacqui and Sulayman will be performing a varied and challenging programme, including Strauss’s Sonata for violin and piano in E flat major, op.18; Beethoven’s Sonata no.1 in D major, op.12; Mozart’s Adagio in E major, K.261 as well as Massenet’s much loved Meditation from Thaïs and Saint-Saens’ Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso.

People Passion Purpose set to inspire Mzansi

TX: Sunday, 19 February 2017, 6:05PM

People Passion Purpose is a six-part series of inspirational regional documentaries. The home-grown series follows individuals across South Africa, as they tell their unique stories to a variety of filmmakers. The documentaries will air every Sunday, from 19 February 2017 at 6:05PM on e.tv and eHD

e.tv has, over the past few years, aired rich and colourful documentaries some of which, received significant international recognition. The seasons were filled with extraordinary, informative and inspiring stories from around the country. One of the most extraordinary stories aired in 2015 was VenRap: Taking Hip Hop To The Streets. The documentary focused on 2 young Venda men, Oriel Makhokha and Fhululani Nemahunguni, who set up a digital radio station ‘Venrap Radio’ to help out up-and-coming Venda hip hop artists share their talents of rhyming and beat boxing in diverse languages of Limpopo.

People Passion Purpose will give Mzansi a chance to explore unexpected cultural developments across provinces including Kwa-Zulu Natal, Mpumalanga, Free State and the Eastern Cape. Each show is produced by different filmmakers, focusing on different and unique elements of each province in an effort to shine a light on the way South Africa is growing, shifting and progressing.

“Documentaries are a supreme form of expression,” says Marlon Davids, MD at e.tv’s Channel Division. “e.tv provides a platform for ordinary South Africans to share their narratives. The return of People Passion Purpose highlights key facts and voices that inspire us broadly to identify challenges, create opportunities and drive change”.

One of the inspiring stories which forms part of the six-part series is titled The Rhyming Saint, produced by Thape Media in Mpumalanga. The documentary follows 23 year-old Nhlanhla Solomon Spencer AKA ‘Real Saint’, who grew up without parents. He and his producer made internationally-recognised music in a shack in the small mining town of Delmas. He is the first South African Christian gospel hip hop artist to have an album on iTunes.

Another intriguing documentary that viewers can look forward is titled Mbobozebeshu. In Northern KZN, there is a village known as Ingwavuma, where a 66 year old man refuses to sway with the ‘modern’ tidal wave. In Mbobozebheshu’s home, every house in the yard was built by him using mud, stones and beer bottles to decorate. Mbobozebheshu claims that the government refused to build him an RDP home because according to the map, he seems to fall on the Swaziland border therefore he cannot receive water or electricity from the SA government.

Catch more intriguing stories on People Passion Purpose, starting Sunday, 19 February 2017 at 6:05PM on e.tv
KZN – Blood Family
Johan Volsteed is a former principal of Grey College in Bloemfontein – named ‘the best school in Africa’ – whose life and views have been shaped by his decision to get involved with struggling township schools after retirement and his relationship with two young women he met and ‘adopted’ in the process. The two young ladies were both shaped by almost unbearable experiences in their youth that threatened to forever destroy their faith in men, but with the support of this unconventional father figure, they are on their way to achieving success in two very different fields.

26 February 2017,6:05PM
KZN – Sweet Success
A story of a group of extraordinary women in KwaZulu-Natal who, despite poverty, cultural barriers and a series of tests from Mother Nature, have become successful sugar cane growers. We will track the stories of 4 Zulu Sugar Baronesses who have inspired and supported each other in a world traditionally dominated by men.

5 March 2017,6:05PM
Port Elizabeth – Breaking The Habit
Professional break dancer Cheslyn Meyer takes viewers on a journey through his community, gang violence and substance abuse-plauged Schauderville in Port Elizabeth. After losing his mother to cancer and having to drop out of University, Cheslyn turned to a dance style known as ‘B-boying’, which is a form of breakdance. He excelled and it has afforded him opportunities such as representing SA internationally. He now provides hope and refuge to the youth of his community through the organisation Genoeg is Genoeg (Enough is Enough).

12 March 2017,6:05PM
KZN – Mbobozebeshu
In Northern KZN is a village called Ingwavuma, where 66 year-old Mbobozebheshu lives the life that he believes his forebears lived. Every house in his yard was built using mud and stones and decorated with beer bottles. Mbobozebheshu claims that the government refused to build him a RDP home because, according to the map, he seems to fall on the Swaziland border and therefore is not entitled to receive water or electricity, supplied by the SA government.

19 March 2017,6:05PM
Free State – Wheel and Dealing
While on holiday in Port Elizabeth, Jared Mclntyre went scuba diving and ended up with spinal cord injuries that left him unable to walk. After extensive counselling, Jared, still in his mid-20’s, accepted his wheelchair- bound status. He came across a sport called Wheelchair Rugby and formed a team called The Mustangs in Bloemfontein, with fellow paraplegic people from all walks of life, different races and both sexes. The Mustangs Wheelchair Rugby Club not only competes in the SA Wheelchair Rugby League but has adopted a local underprivileged school for disabled children, who join The Mustangs on weekends to participate in the sport.
26 March 2017,6:05PM
Mpumalanga – The Rhyming Saint
Poverty-stricken and raised without the love of parents, 23 year-old Nhlanhla Solomon Spencer, AKA ‘Real Saint’ seemingly had the odds stacked against him and he seemed set to inherit a life of perpetual want. But he had a dream – and without advanced equipment, he and his producer made internationally-recognised music in a shack in the sleepy mining town of Delmas. He is the first Christian gospel hip hop artist to have an album on iTunes, and the first to be nominated for awards.

The popularity of the event, which takes place from Thursday 23 February to Monday 27 February 2017, has grown exponentially over the last few years, with campsites at Tieties Baai sold-out at least nine months ahead of the event. Apart from attracting thousands of people to the reserve, the event contributes significantly towards the economy of the region. Local entrepreneurs are also given the opportunity to showcase their goods and services, further entrenching an entrepreneurial culture and spirit in the communities.

Founder and Heart FM Presenter Clarence Ford says the festival promises a little more this year. “We will be hosting a community youth sports festival on the Voorstrand beach in Paternoster on Saturday 25th February. We’d like to focus on youth in the area and sport, which is well loved in the community. We want to unlock the abundance of talent in youth, in the fields of music and sport. It is important that we are not only seen as festival creators, but that we are invested in developing the youth of the region. We want to leave a lasting legacy for years to come, without leaving a footprint on the splendid.”

Ford says he would like to get more youth involved in the festival. “We want to upskill them with knowledge about festival design and the management thereof. To facilitate this, we have the Cape Peninsula of Technology on board again this year. In 2016, 15 youth from the Paternoster area were acknowledged for their learning by the Cape Peninsula University of Technology. We are proud of their achievement. They are able to now be economically active in more than just the crayfish industries.”

Sponsors for the 2017 edition include, NEDBANK, Old Mutual, The Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport, VODACOM, Distell and SAB Miller. The event strategically involves the Department of Fisheries, to educate the local community and visitors about the dramatically decreasing crayfish reserves.
